Federal Filing Date Extended, but Not Yet States

To ease tensions during the COVID-19 crisis, President Donald Trump has extended the date for both filing your federal tax return and paying federal taxes owed from April 15 to July 15.

However, most states have not yet followed suit. Therefore, while you do not need to file your federal tax return until July 15, you may still need to file your state return by the normal April 15 date. Massachusetts, for example, has not yet extended the filing deadline.

However, we anticipate that states will follow the fed in extending their filing deadlines. New York has already extended their state filing deadline, and others will no doubt follow.
